In the novel Fight Club by Chuck Palahniuk the protagonist Tyler Durden is talking to a doorman and the doorman says “If you don’t know what you want you end up with a lot you don’t.”
I believe this rings true especially in the consumer world we live in.
We buy things we don’t need to paper the cracks.
Know What You Want
We need to determine what we want, then back up our Choices with our actions.
The blogger and author of Atomic Habits James Clear said “ Every action you take is a vote for the type of person you wish to become. No single instance will transform your beliefs, but as the votes build up, so does the evidence of your new identity.”
Vote For A Life You’ll Be Proud Of
Some bang for your buck habits that will give you great returns are:
- Work out 3 x per week
- Staying hydrated (mostly drinking water)
- Save and invest at least 10% of your income
- Read at least half an hour per day
- Journal / be grateful
- Eat well
- Have a good sleep routine
- Get up early
There are more positive habits you can form, although it depends on your goals.
The Jerry Seinfeld Method
Jerry Seinfeld Is one of the most successful comedians of all time and the cornerstone for making it in comedy is having good jokes.
To have good jokes means to write good jokes and the more jokes he would write, the better ones he would have.
It all comes down to forming the habit of writing jokes.
Jerry would have a paper calendar on his wall and after writing jokes for the day, he would put an x in the column for the day he wrote.
As an example, a week of productive writing would look like this:
xxxxxxx
The goal is to never break the chain. But if you do, simply get right back on track.
What’s The Habit You Need To Form To Get What You Want
For Jerry it’s writing jokes, for me it’s writing blog posts, for the Olympian Michael Phelps it was swimming, what’s it for you?
The Bottom Line
If we don’t know what we want we get a lot of what we don’t want. I believe our goal is to find out what we want to achieve, then every day through our actions slowly but surely do what’s required to make progress towards becoming the type of person we can be proud of.
